What is a Multipotentialite?

I know that many of you coming to this site are a little confused about multipotentiality and what it means to be a multipotentialite. There's a simple reason for this, the term multipotentialite is relatively new and was first brought into society in the year 2015 by career coach and Ted Talk speaker, Emilie Wapnick. She is the owner of a very informative and supportive website (www.puttylike.com) which I highly recommend you check out for more information. She delivered a beautiful Ted Talk on why some of us don't have one true calling (https://www.ted.com/talks/emilie_wapnick_why_some_of_us_don_t_have_one_true_calling?utm_campaign=tedspread&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=tedcomshare) She's done a lot of work to begin breaking the stigma of a person having multiple callings in life.

Multipotentialites are not yet understood in society. Almost every kid has been asked the question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Which when broken down is actually a pretty limiting question, because when it's asked it is expected that you give a simple and sweet answer, "I'm going to college for ____. I hope to become a _____." If you're reading this and that's you, that's fantastic and you should embrace that. However, if you are reading this and that has caused you great anxiety, especially as a teenager, you may be a multipotentialite. Multipotentialites are not people that just don't know what they want to do yet though. They generally have quite a few things that they are interested in pursuing, sometimes even at the same time. This can be difficult to explain when you have people just quickly asking you, "What do you want to be?"

If you have been asked that famous question, you have likely also been told, "You can do anything you put your mind to." Generally parents or teachers will say this to you to encourage you. They say, "you can be an astronaut, a doctor, a ballerina, even the president." So my question in response to that is, "Why can't we do it all?" Why can't the president be really into knitting? Why can't a ballerina start a heating and air conditioning company? Why can't a desk receptionist become a star football player? We are only limited by the limits we place on ourselves.

This site is really important to me, and I need your help. I need your help to create a safe place on the internet where we can express our passions and interests, no matter how many or how vastly different. I need your help to create a place of inspiration so we can all go out and live our most authentic, happiest, and fullest lives.

Thank you for taking the time to read today, stick around for more stories and lessons I've learned through my journey as a multipotentialite thus far. So that it's not just me sharing my stories this whole time, feel free to send me your stories and input, shoot me an email anytime! Hope you hear from you soon.
